Prolonged processing times for retention of Danish citizenship

17.07.2014  17:50

Any person born abroad who has never been resident in Denmark nor stayed in Denmark under conditions indicating some close association with Denmark will lose his/her Danish nationality on reaching the age of 22, unless this will make the person concerned stateless.

Up until now the recommendation has been to submit an application for retention of Danish citizenship soon after having turned 21 years, which is also stated on page 2 of the Danish national passport. However, due to the fact that the processing time at the Nationality Division of the Danish Ministry of Justice in cases concerning retention of Danish nationality currently is 14 to 16 months, the Ministry of Justice advice applicants to submit applications between the age of 20 and 21 years.

Please visit the website of the Ministry of Justice for further information (in Danish).
