Niels Boel Abrahamsen has been Denmark’s ambassador to Canada since August 2013. Prior to taking up his current position, he was Ambassador of Denmark to Afghanistan. He started his career at the Danish Ministry of Finance and soon moved on to the Foreign Ministry. He has held several important positions at home and abroad.
In Copenhagen he has worked with European Union affairs and financial and security issues. In 2009 he was appointed Under Secretary and Ambassador with responsibility for security and operations. He has been posted to the Danish embassy in Vienna, and from 2001-2005 he headed the economic and trade team in the Danish embassy in Washington, D.C.
He is married to fellow diplomat Karen Eva and they have two sons.
