New Nationality Act - Reacquiring Danish Citizenship

On September 1st 2015 a new Nationality Act concerning multiple nationalities comes into force.  The new legislation will allow a number of citizens to reacquire or retain their Danish citizenship while also having or obtaining another citizenship.

Former Danish citizens, who have lost their Danish nationality by acquiring a foreign nationality, will be able to reacquire their nationality by making a declaration to The State Administration (Statsforvaltningen), provided they fulfil certain requirements. The declaration must be made between 01 September 2015 and 31 August 2020.

The Embassy is still awaiting instructions from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarifying the roles and responsibilities of the Foreign Service with the authorities responsible (The Ministry of Aliens, Integration and Housing and The State Administration). Full clarity into the application process will likely not be available until close to the date of entering into force (September 1st 2015). The Embassy will update our website as soon as new information becomes available.
