Tracing your Danish ancestors

Each year, many people of Danish descent visit Denmark, often using the trip to find out more about where their family lived before they emigrated to Canada.

Some may want to contact relatives and others may wish to trace their family ancestry. Whatever the purpose of the visit, it must be noted that any serious genealogical research calls for a good deal of preparation if the result is to be as rewarding and satisfying as hoped for.

The more basic the information you have about the person you are looking for, the greater your chances of success.

Information about Danish ancestors can be found in the Danish State Archives and the Danish Emigration Archives (only in Danish). Denmark's official website can also give a complete overview of available tools for tracing your Danish ancestors. This website also includes a genealogical dictionary with useful translations of Danish terms.
