Processing Times

Please note that processing times depend on case volume. Expect longer processing times in May, June, July, August and December due to peak season travel.

A visa application can be launched as early as 3 months prior to the arrival date in Schengen, and should not be launched later than 18-30 days prior. Here is why:

1. It can take up to 14 days to obtain an appointment with VFS for submitting your application.

2. Case processing does not begin until the application arrives at the Embassy. Hence, your application is not launched when you apply online, or when you have your appointment with VFS. The shipping of your passport to and from the Embassy adds 2-4 days to the processing time.

3. Normal processing time at the Embassy is 15 calendar days. An application lodged less than 15 calendar days before the intended departure may be accepted at VFS, but the final decision might be taken after the date of departure. Please note that case processing may be extended to 60 days if further scrutiny is required (typically previous overstays in the Schengen area, etc.).

Applications launched on humanitarian grounds are given priority, provided such applicants have presented documents proving the necessity of their travel. Humanitarian grounds may include receiving urgent medical treatment, visiting a close relative who is seriously ill or attending a funeral of a close relative.

Urgency does not apply to late submission of an application and/or a purchased flight ticket, which should not be done before you have your passport with the visa. For the benefit of those in need of this service during difficult times, please do not abuse this service for other purposes than what it is intended for.

EU/EEA Citizens

Family members of EU citizens who have exercised their right of free movement (meaning that the EU citizen resides in or travels to a Member State other than his/her country of origin) benefit from certain procedural facilitations.

Once the relation to the EU citizen has been documented, applications are prioritized and the applicant is not required to submit bank statements or a travel medical insurance. An application fee does not apply either.

Denmark has signed bilateral visa-facilitation agreements with a number of countries, which means that citizens of these countries have a reduced processing time of 10 calendar days. Please note that this ONLY applies to citizens from the countries listed below:

It is the applicant’s responsibility to apply in time for the intended departure.
