The Embassy of Denmark in Ottawa is looking for a political officer with a focus on the Arctic. 

Job Description 

If you are passionate about the Arctic with a focus on foreign and security policy, you may be our new colleague. As a neighbor in the North, Canada’s Arctic policy and engagement in the Arctic are of significant importance to the Kingdom of Denmark. The position as an Arctic Political Officer aims at strengthening the Kingdom of Denmark’s Arctic and North Atlantic profile and network in Canada.

You will be part of a team responsible for the preparation of foreign and security policy analyses and reports related to developments in Canada. The position will have a particular focus on Arctic matters related to Canada and the Kingdom of Denmark, including the priorities of the governments of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. An important task will be expanding the embassy’s contacts and cooperation with Arctic and other relevant stakeholders in Canada in both government and civil society.

You must be able to work independently and be able to identify areas of cooperation as well as analyze how developments in Canadian Arctic policy affect Danish interests. Your work will also involve cooperation with Denmark’s Trade Council North America. Further tasks may include preparation of delegation visits, answering questions from Danish and Canadian authorities and citizens, preparation of events, speechwriting and gathering of information relevant for Arctic issues. The embassy is busy and your tasks will evolve according to policy developments and priorities. You must be a team player and ready to engage in various tasks.  

 

Required Qualifications 

We are looking for a colleague with: 

  • University degree in social sciences, law or humanities, and relevant professional experience.
  • Good political understanding and knowledge of foreign and security policy issues related to the Kingdom of Denmark, Canada and the Arctic.
  • Fluency in English and Danish. Knowledge of French is considered an asset.
  • Good writing and analytical skills.
  • Good collaboration skills and willingness to cooperate across teams at the embassy.
  • Interest and experience in building networks and communication.
  • Flexibility and ability to work under time pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently without compromising quality.
  • Humor and a positive attitude.


Employment conditions 

  • You will be offered full-time, permanent employment with a probationary period of 3 months.
  • Your standard working hours will be 37 hours per week.
  • You will be entitled to 25 days of paid vacation per year.
  • Your salary will reflect your qualifications, relevant experience and proven work-related results.
  • Benefits and other employment conditions will be based on the Embassy’s Staff handbook.

Expected commencement date 

As soon as possible. The employment requires security clearance from the Danish authorities.
