Nordic Ambassadors travel to St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador
Over the course of last week, Ambassador Hanne Fugl Eskjaer had the opportunity of traveling to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador alongside her Nordic counterparts for their first joint visit to the province.
Newfoundland and Labrador is a growing region of interest for the Nordics, and Denmark in particular. Premier Andrew Furey, shared the provinces ambitious plans to modernizing Health Care services in the province. Denmark is committed to creating a digitalized system, that supports our Health Care workers, provides easier access to patients, and addresses the needs of citizens those who need help. Such great opportunities for closer collaboration in Newfoundland and Labrador on the Health file.
Denmark is also looking to expand its partnership with the province, as Premier Furey explained, Newfoundland and Labrador is dedicated to the Green Transition, achieving Net-Zero, and promoting new innovative solutions in the renewable energy industry. The province has significant potential for onshore and offshore wind farms that will help Canada be a leading producer of Green Hydrogen. It was a pleasure to discuss these ambitious plans in detail with Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Bernard Davis, and Assistant Deputy Minister’s of Industry, Energy, and Technology Julian Ludmer, and Jason Higgins.
Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Nordics also share the similarity of being coastal regions. The oceans play a big role in our economies, particular when it comes to fishing and maritime transportation. The Ambassadors had a very fruitful conversation with Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Forestry, and Agriculture, Jamie Chippett discussing the importance of growing a sustainable blue economy. It’s important we keep supporting good jobs, while building more sustainable business practices, and protecting our oceans and maritime wildlife.
Copenhagen is leading the way to implement modern change in city developments in order to make our capital more sustainable, energy efficient and accessible to all. It was a pleasure to hear from Mayor of St. John’s Danny Breen who share the city’s commitment to achieving Net-Zero, modernizing building designs to make homes and workplaces more energy efficient, and implementing fossil free public transit options.
Governments also need the support of private companies to implement big ideas, and it was great to meet with PAL Aerospace Senior VP Joseph Galimberti, and Director of Marine Institute, Bill Chislett about the ways their business can support changes in Newfoundland and Labrador but also in the Nordic region – both PAL and the Marine institute respectively play a vital role in providing transportation, surveillance and security and offer high level training to some of the best individuals working for the Blue Economy of tomorrow.
